Estimate only, based on typical Pennsylvania electricity rates and sunlight. “Monthly total with solar” means your solar payment plus the utility charges you still pay. Your real numbers depend on your roof, shade, usage and the agreement you choose. Not a quote or tax advice.

Home solar in PA, priced for 2026

The rules changed this year. We’ll tell you what still works for your home, and what doesn’t, before anyone comes out.

For homeowners on Penelec, West Penn Power, Duquesne Light and local electric co-ops across Western PA.

What changed for PA homeowners in 2026

The 30% federal tax credit for buying solar ended. Systems homeowners buy with cash or a loan and finish in 2026 or later don’t get it.

Leases and power purchase agreements still carry it. The company that owns the panels claims the credit and can pass part of the value back through a lower monthly rate. Under current rules, those systems have to be up and running by December 31, 2027.

Pennsylvania net metering is still in place. Power your panels send back to the grid is credited on your bill.

Tax rules can change. Your specialist will confirm what applies to your home before you sign anything. This is not tax advice.

Two ways to go solar

Neither one is right for everyone. Your consult covers both with your actual numbers.

Lease or PPA

For a lower bill with nothing down

  • The solar company owns the panels
  • $0 upfront
  • Federal credit claimed by the owner, reflected in your rate
  • Maintenance handled by the owner

Own it

Cash or solar loan

  • You own the panels
  • Full price, or $0 down with a loan
  • No federal credit for 2026 installs
  • You keep net metering savings and solar renewable energy credits (SRECs)

Common questions

Is solar still worth it in Pennsylvania without the tax credit?

For many homes, yes, but it depends on your bill, your roof and which option you choose. That’s why the consult uses your real numbers instead of an average.

What happens if I sell my house?

An owned system usually transfers with the home. A lease or PPA can be transferred to the buyer. Your specialist will walk through the terms. [CONFIRM TRANSFER TERMS]

Does solar work in our winters?

Panels produce less in winter and more in summer. Net metering credits from sunny months help cover darker ones.

What warranty comes with the system?

I’m on a rural electric co-op. Can I still go solar?

Often, but co-ops set their own rules for crediting the power you send back. We’ll check your co-op’s policy before recommending anything.
